(continued from above)
For practical purposes the line snakes around Traveuni but in all actuality it cuts right through it. On the road to Wairiki look for the red beacon to mark the spot and be sure and get a picture of yourself half in one day and half in the other day.
Wairiki Catholic Mission looks out over the Somosomo Strait. It is a beautiful church with french stained glass and impressive beam ceiling. You will also see a beautiful painting of the missionaries helping warriors in the battle develop a strategy against Tongan attachers.
The Waitavala water slide is not for the weak of heart. It’s a natural water slide... yes natural water slide and a few bruises just come with the experience when you travel to Fiji Islands. Think twice before barreling down this one after a good rain as you might get more than you bargained for. So just to be on the safe side wait until you see one of the locals make it out ok before testing you luck.
Hiking
Lake Tagimaucia is a popular destination when traveling to Fiji where you can find an old volcanic crater filled with water. A lot of vegetation floats on the lake and you can find the national flower tagimaucia on the lake shores. the trek starts on the Somosomo where you need to get permission to go on the hike. Plan for about an 8 hour day for the hike.
Des Voeux Peak is the second highest mountan on the island and from here you can usually see Lake Tagimaucia and sometimes the Lau islands. This is a pretty steep climb and can get very hot. be sure and bring lots of water and allow about 3-4 hours up and about 2 hors down.
Southern Taveuni
Naqarawali is one of the main villages in Southern Taveuni. A must see is the blow hole, you can catch a rainbow in the air as water jumps through the volcanic rock. It is safest to visit around low tide and be cautious as the conditions can change regularly and the waves can start pounding the shore. It’s best not to venture down on the rocks.
Matei
This is mostly a residential area on Taveuni’s northern point. A lot of foreigners have purchased property here to own a pice of paradise. you can find places to stay, good dining options and dive shops.
Eastern Taveuni
The land in Eastern Taveuni is extraordinary and many lodging options have been forgone in an effort to promote ecotourism. Here you will find Bouma National Heritage Park where you can find three Tavoro Waterfalls each having natural swimming pools. The first water fall is about 80 ft high and has a changing area on site and with picnic tables and BBQ sites.
The second is about a 30-40 minute hike with resting spots along the way. Be prepared to cross a river to get there, there is a rope strung across it making it easier to step from rock to rock. It is smaller than the first fall but has an unforgettable swimming pool. The third fall is smaller than the other two but has great swimming and if you brought your snorkeling gear you can enjoy looking at prawns in the water, there is also rocks on the ledge for jumping in the pool.
Vidawa Rain Forrest Trail offers a great walk with a full-day guided track offered by Shamans. It starts in the Vidawa villiage and takes you through some historic fortified village sites then goes into the rain forrest where you will see lots of bird life and ends by Tavoro water falls. You are only allowed to do this trek by guide to be sure and book in advance.
Waitabu Marine Park
Fantastic for snorkeling or being lazy on the white sand beach when you to Fiji Islands. This park is only accessible with a guide however. The local village of Waitabu has set up half day tours where you can enjoy guided snorkeling, a beautiful bilibili raft ride including tea time at the village.
Lavena Coastal Walk
This trail may take a bit of effort but is well worth the energy when traveling to Fiji. Following white and black sanded beaches you will pass peaceful villages and climb through rain forests with exhilarating water falls. It’s a bit of an adventure hike even though the path is marked properly. Along the way there is an extension bridge, rocks to walk over and swims through two deep pools
Offshore Islands in Taveuni
Matagi, Qamea and Laucala are some of the small islands just offshore from Taveuni. Matagi is a magnificent horse shoe shaped island with steep rainforest sides. Qamea is the closest to Taveuni. You can find a number of black and white sand beaches. Qamea is rich with bird life. Laucala was owned by the late Malcolm Forbes and is now a ghost resort. It looks more like a midwestern town than a Fijian village and a must see when traveling to Fiji.
