Fakarava Island

Adventure Brat - Villa

If you get bored on Fakarava Island in the French Polynesia then you just don’t know how to unwind and relax. This island is very undeveloped and perfect if you are interested in a true island vacation striped free of the cookie cutter resort seasoning.

Fakarava Island didn’t even have a paved road on it until 2003 when they were expecting the French president.

Fakarava Island is very close to Bora-Bora and Tahiti, but unlike it’s high tourist traffic neighbors, Fakarava Island’s population is only about 500 residents, making it the perfect place to unwind and get away from it all. There are plenty of

unique activities on Fakarava Island other thank just being lazy. You will find incredible hiking and trekking on your vacation to Fakarava Island and there is a nearby village called Tetamanu which is well worth the visit to get engulfed with island life.

Be sure to make the trip and see the church in Tetamanu that is built completely out of coral. You will also find several pearl farms in the area that usually give free tours from time to time. There is one pearl and oyster farm around Rotoava called the Pearl Guest House Havaiki that will even let you snorkel the farm and any pearls you find you can some times keep.

The Pearl Guest House Havaiki also offers incredible island lodging options including bungalows right on the beach and excursions on the water. If you are thinking about diving in Fakarava Island head towards the Northern Garuae Pass and the southern Tumakohua Pass where you will find magnificent coral and wonderful reefs for hours of underwater enjoyment.

Expect about a day worth of traveling to get to and from Tumakohua and you can only get there by boat. A good tour operator to use for this excursion is Te Ava Nui. You can also find some lodging options with this tour operator that are very affordable and start under $50.

Another great place to stay is Relais Marama that has ocean front bungalows for around $106. Be sure that you book reservations before making the trip because this resort only has six ocean front bungalows in Fakarava and 3 other rooms available.

So now your wondering how to get here, well they just got their road not too long ago so an airport is out of the question right... wrong, you can catch flights to Fakarava Island everyday that depart from Papeete, Tahiti by Air Tahiti and last about an hour. Fakarava Island in the French Polynesia is the perfect place for an off the beaten path island vacation that still has all the comforts you expect for a holiday. You will experience raw island life at it’s best including, once in a life time sunsets, slightly unconventional accommodations all wrapped up in an island you can almost call your own.
