There are more rapids on the South Fork but there is a lot less turbulence. The north and the middle forks will provide the rafter with a second to none wilderness experience. However there are swift currents and loud rapids that can present unwanted dangerous. Rafting on american river should be done with caution as there are sever dangers. Be sure and hire a good outfitter with several years of experience.
Some of the raids are even unrunable and have taken the lives of some of the most experienced boaters. The north fork has rapids ranging from class III - IV and spans about 9 to 14 miles and is most popular during April to June. The middle fork holds rapids ranging from class II - IV and spans about 26 miles with a season from May to September. The north fork of the river has a lot of class II - III whitewater rapids cover about 9 - 12 miles with a season from April to October and again in October.
